Once upon a time....I have a memory....  Two ways to start a story.  One fantasy, one based on reality.  A story, however, can only exist in a setting, a place where the action happens.
Modelling Stories in Landscape is your chance to make a story in clay.  It falls into the category of narrative ceramics; think Greek urns, think Grayson Perry, think Robert Rapson.
This class is where serious learning meets the joy and imaginative fun of bringing a story to life in clay.

What to expect:
Creativity exercises to stimulate your imagination, and focussing exercises to  hone your story and landscape setting.
Discussions on the formal elements and methods of sculpture.
An investigation of the history of narrative ceramics.
Making a narrative ceramic sculpture or vessel, through modelling and other ceramic hand building methods. 

Tutor:
Susan St Lawrence is a sculptor, curator and educator living in Hamilton.  Her art practice in ceramics, bronze casting and drawing spans nearly three decades.  Susan completed her Diploma of Ceramic Arts at ASP before completing a further year at Unitec to earn her BA (contemporary crafts).
She and Helen Perrett form the art collaboration known as Small Stories and their whimsical narrative ceramic exhibitions have been a regular part of the New Zealand ceramic exhibition calendar since 2012. 
Several years ago Susan began teaching freedom drawing classes to help artists struggling with creative block to find the love and excitement of creating art again.

Clean up times are within the 3 hours allocated for class time

If a workshop is unable to go ahead on the planned date due to the tutor being Covid positive, we will reschedule these events to a later date. Refunds will only be possible if no suitable alternative date can be found
