Tutor: Ronald Boersen

About:

For intermediate level potters and above.

Beyond the glaze providing a surface to our pots, the clay gives us a first canvas. In this course we will explore and get hands on with a multitude of surface treatments and glaze considerations in the plastic, leather hard, and bisqued stages of making pots. We will discuss different approaches in texturing our work, as well as dive into the many interesting materials, such as sodium silicate and coloured slips, and techniques such as Hakeme, Crackle texture, Mishima and Sgraffito.

In the first half of the course we will talk about various concepts of surface treatment and introduce a multitude of techniques. The second half of the course will allow us to practice and explore these, while demonstrating new techniques each week but in a more reflective and expansive approach.
