Fire & Clay

Fire & Clay 2023 showcases and awards the outstanding pottery and ceramics of members of Auckland Studio Potters (ASP). ASP is delighted to announce the selector and judge this year is Ceramic Artist, Peter Hawkesby.

Peter Hawkesby’s ceramic career dates to the 1970s when he learnt pottery north of Auckland. In the decades since, his work has been acquired by major public and private collections and revered by potters and public alike. Hawkesby lived in Tokyo in the 1980s before spending two decades running the iconic café Alleluja in Karangahape Road’s St Kevin’s Arcade. Gladly, he returned to full-time making in 2015 to great applause and a swell of fantastic exhibitions followed.

This annual exhibition celebrates excellence in ceramic practice and demonstrates both the depth and breadth of experience of ASP members, who range from senior practitioners to impassioned amateurs, as well as students studying in craft, design or fine arts programmes. The work on show includes functional ware and sculptural pieces, and encompasses a wide variety of making, glazing, and firing techniques.

See the 2023 catalogue of all pieces here.
