Fire & Clay 2024
Fire & Clay is one of ASP’s annual exhibitions that celebrates excellence in ceramic practice and demonstrates both the depth and breadth of experience of ASP members, who range from senior practitioners to impassioned amateurs, as well as students studying in craft, design or fine arts programmes. The selector and judge for Fire & Clay this year is artist, Fiona Jack.
Fiona, as well as being is a much loved member of ASP, is the Head of School at Elam, Te Waka Tūhura Elam School of Fine Art at Waipapa Taumata Rau The University of Auckland. Fiona has a long history of making artworks for public space and over the past decade she has developed a pottery practice focused on the production of wood fired domestic ware. The social dimension of her public artwork finds a quieter and more intimate set of relationships through this practice of making cups and bowls for eating and drinking together. She enjoys focusing on the details of how these vessels function and their engagement with the body and the ways we use domestic objects. Fiona loves working alongside artists as they seek to deepen their relationship to their own artistic practice and those around them, so we thank you Fiona for bringing this ethos to Fire and Clay this year.
