About the works:
No one likes being put in a box. We all try to pretend we're something other than. As artists we share a studio, but are dissimilar in just about every way, working in our own boxes. Although collaboration frees us from our own boxes, conforming to another's ideas creates a new box all of its own. This collaboration sees us use a variety of techniques to put clay in boxes. All exhibited works were made in 2023.
Artist Bios
Michelle Bow, winner of the 2022 Quarry Arts Ceramics Award, fell in love with clay at Auckland Teacher’s College in 1985. In 2001 she left her career in graphic design to become a full-time ceramicist and has completed the Otago Polytechnic Ceramics Diploma. Michelle has been a finalist in many national exhibitions, and together with her husband Maak makes ceramics which sell in galleries throughout Aotearoa.
Maak Bow has a background in design and illustration and has been sculpting in clay for about a decade. His process is considered, probably too much. His work responds, through form, to some current exploration of a design or art philosophy. Maak is New Zealand born and based just north of Auckland.
