Marilyn Wheeler has a solo exhibition of new ceramic and photographic work at The Yvonne Rust Gallery - Quarry Arts Centre, Whangarei, opening on Thursday 29th March 5 pm.

Marilyn creates both functional and artistic domestic ware, drawing from her admiration of the visually beautiful, and observance of life around her. She employs glazed and un-glazed portions, vibrant colour and bold images to achieve her distinctive style. Marilyn considers how cultures change as modern life evolves, and the figures that grace her elegant forms are reminders of this. Young warriors discuss the changing face of their traditions. Polished feminine silhouettes model a disappearing glamour.

Marilyn’s stunning photographic works reflect the grace of her ceramic pieces, as she focuses her gaze on the natural beauty of flowers.

About the Artist

Marilyn has worked with clay for over 30 years, and she is still as enthusiastic now as she was when she began.

She gained her Advanced Diploma in Ceramic Art (Level 7) in 2007 through the Otago Polytechnic School. She also has a Diploma in Photography. Marilyn has exhibited in many solo and group shows over the years, and has won awards for her ceramic works.

“I look upon my clay as my canvas – to manipulate – then to decorate and to display my photographic images. I feel privileged to be able to marry my art with my craft, to utilise my photographs to create decals that can adorn my clay works.
Also, to be able to create stencils to portray the lives of others is rather special. If I can engage some form of dialogue with the viewer, then I feel that I have achieved what I set out to do.”
